That guy…the smart, funny, tough, talented one who works hard and plays harder. He tirelessly serves his country, his many friends, strangers in need, and most of all his family. He lives every day with amazing love, passion, and dedication to those around him. That guy is Mike Bates.

On November 25, 2011, Mike was dealt his greatest challenge…while motorcycling with his son Nick, Mike suffered a terrible accident which caused a debilitating spinal cord injury. This level of injury is often fatal and multiple times in the hours and days following, the medical professionals didn’t know if Mike would survive, much less do so without severe brain damage…but they also didn’t know Mike.  read more

The Fourth Annual Southwest Spinal Cord Injury Golf Tournament is back! Scheduled for October 27th at Rancho Bernardo Inn.

We have the whole field again…144 slots for the A and B groups in what was RBI’s biggest tournament the last couple years. There are also options for Hole Sponsors, Lunch Sponsors and Beverage Sponsors. There is even a pre-registration for the Putting Competition and Raffle.

Bag Drop and Bloody Mary Bar open at 9:00 AM, lunch from Phil’s BBQ again at 11:00 AM and a shotgun start at 12:30. Complimentary appetizers after golf at the awards ceremony with auction and raffle in the ball room. Drink coupons to be given for use at lunch, on the course and in the ballroom. See below for prizes.

We’ve had a good time with Playmates coming to support the tournament and that tradition will continue with the September 2014 Playmate of the Month, Stephanie Branton.

2017 Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, Snowmass, CO

April 4th, 2017|0 Comments

I had the opportunity to go to the 2017 disabled veterans Winter sports clinic in Snowmass Colorado. It was an awesome time. One full week of activities including skiing, snowmobiling and touring on a snow cat. It was amazing having all the volunteers there to help me do anything I wanted to do. No matter what it was, they figured out a way to make it happen. The focus was skiing, but all of the activities were great.

I can’t wait until next year to go do it again and hopefully bring the family this time.

Thanks to all of your generous contributions, Mike is driving again! This has been a huge jump in independance. The next step is continued physical therapy to continue his funtional gains. Physical therapy, depending on intensity, has cost up to $20,000 per year when it was going hard core. It’s less than that now but still comes as an unreimbured cost.

Throughout Mike’s life, he’s been the one helping others, and he struggles being the one asking for help, but he needs your assistance. If you’re able to donate, or help share Mike’s story, or even just want to offer up some additional prayers while staying up to date on Mike’s progress, click one of the links below and thank you for your support.
